grandmother bird (2006)

grandmother -

i had forgotten
you wished
to transform into
a bird
upon your death

(if your lord would
allow it)

all these years i thought
of your wish
as diminutive:
bespeaking
your physical
stature

but last night
in my dream

i felt the leaves
of the trees' canopy
on my face

& maneuvering
in the clouds

& the great visual expanse
of the world
below

& the clarity
of wind

& i felt your wish:
as made by a
mature woman
who lived a
difficult life

who made a rational,
serious choice for
this kind
of afterlife
over any other

what if
this kind of heaven
is advanced thinking?

what happens
if re-incarnation
to birds of sky
is a higher-order
existential experience?

& that my dear diminutive
grandmother had
genius vision into
this reality?
